Alan Spencer-Green
Primary Type of Art: Ceramics
Description
Alan is self-taught as a potter and set up his first studio in 1961 making fine stoneware with high-fired glazes. He first exhibited in a young potters' exhibition at Primavera, London, in the early 1960s. This was followed by numerous exhibitions in museums and private galleries worldwide. Alan is perhaps best known for his small bowls. These are hand-thrown in porcelain and biscuited to 1190C - supported to prevent collapse and distortion. Their density after this firing requires them to be warmed before they will accept a glaze. A felspathic glaze is then applied and fired to 1290 - 1300C for plain, white or ivory bowls. Yellow bowls are fired again to 1250 - 1260C after application of an iron and vanadium glaze.
