Julian Belmonte
Primary Type of Art: Ceramics
Description
Julian works with white earthenware clay and brick clay thrown on a small Japanese wheel. The work is fired in an electric kiln to 1060oC using either a transparent or tin glaze where ever appropriate. Julian's work is based on the traditional vessel. It is made to have weight and solidity and to be simple in design and form. He uses a combination of throwing and extruding to achieve the shapes, finishing the work with a rubber kidney, and telephone card. The work is undecorated and is concerned with shape, line and balance. Focusing on the play of light and shadow to make it sharp and distinct. The intention is to give his pots an industrial but hand made feel. The pieces he makes can be functional and of over sized proportions. He likes to address shape, form and proportion, taking inspiration from simplicity, interior space and architecture.
