Robert Goldsmith
Primary Type of Art: Ceramics
Description
Trained at the West Surrey College of Art and Design from 1981 to 1984. H e studied extensively abroad, including periods at Bergen’s Kunthandverkskole in Norway, the Loire Valley with Oscar Watson, and on the Danish island of Bornholm.
In February 1985, Robert set up his workshop in Hampshire. His designs draw on the surrounding countryside…the way that the river and marsh change with the seasons. He is influenced by twentieth century painters, particularly Henri Matisse and Eric Gill.
All of Robert’s work is hand-thrown and turned stoneware. Decorated over a ‘Shino’ glaze, he uses pigments of cobalt, iron and copper to give the pots their distinctive blues, browns and reds. Robert’s techniques include slip-trailing, wax resist and fine brush-work. Some of the pieces are further enhanced with the addition of a real gold and platinum lustre’s. The reduction firing brings out the warmth of the iron-rich body and also gives a lustrous shimmer, unique to the work.
